New Haven!!

In New Haven this month is gang initiation month. This means that you need to be a lot more careful downtown than you normally are. What is very scary is that they will just kill a random person that is in their path. This weekend in particular is the worst of the month because they can wear mask and no one with every think anything of it because it is Halloween. Some schools are not even having shuttles go downtown because they don’t want to put their students in danger. One school in the area that is doing this is Quinnipiac. I feel that it is good that schools tell their students this information because a lot of students are not from the area and go downtown a lot.

I would recommend not going downtown a lot late at night. Things start getting bad around midnight. So if you go downtown make sure that you get out of there before midnight. For gang initiation they normally will go after woman.

Some things that gangs do to lure people is:

            Fake an injury

            Ask for directions

            Go out at night with a lot of people around

            Clubs

            Bad neighborhoods

 

Just make sure that you know your surroundings and be careful of where you go. This month is New Haven’s initiation and in April it is Hamden’s. Sometimes I think that all you hear on the news is New Haven this New Haven that.

Halloween at SCSU

Since it was Halloween and Homecoming weekend there were many activities going on campus. For example, on Thursday night there was a Halloween dance in the ballroom that was pretty packed. This was a great time for friends to get together and enjoy themselves during Halloween. On Friday there was a trip to the Trail of Terror in Wallingford. This is a haunted trail that you walk through and if you like scary stuff this is right up your alley. Also, during the snow storm on Saturday was the Football game. I went for only about 10 minutes to show my support but it was just to cold to handle. The guy ended up winning the game with is a good thing.

 Of course this is college so people are obviously going to go to the club and house parties. It seemed that all week and weekend there was something going one. For example, Friday night there was this huge block party downtown which was a lot of fun. There where people from SHU, UNH, SCSU and Quinnipiac. There had to have been over 2000 people there. The only thing that is annoying about the club is that it is crazy what you have to pay to get in. For special nights like Halloween they charge you $12 with the promotion card if you don’t have it then you have to pay $18. I would say that during your college career you need to go to the club at least once. It is a lot of fun but make sure you go with a good amount of people that you trust.

Sport Event on Campus

On Thursday night in the Moore Field House was the boys basketball scrimmage and after that was the Pep Rally. This game was a season opener for the team and they scrimmaged against each other. The team looks like they are going to be very good this year. A lot of students went to the game and the Pep Rally. It was very fun and I plan on going to the boys and girls games because I love basketball. The winner of the scrimmage was the white team but the score at the end was very close. They definitely came back at the end though. I would say that everyone should go to one game this season because it is fun and it is also good to support your school. Go Owls!!

Midterm Time

Over all I am very pleased with my midterm grades. I have worked very hard this half of the semester and I feel that my grades are a true reflection of that. For example, I put in 25-30 hours of work outside the classroom, if I don’t understand something I will ask my professor and if I have little work to do for one night I will work on something that is due at a later time.

During midterm week what I think helped me do as well as I did was that I did not go out and I made sure that I had a good night sleep. Me personally in order to do well I need to be well rested. Also, what helped me study was having study sessions with my friends and if they did not understand something I would explain it to them. This is a great form of studying because you are talking them through the problem and also doing it at the same time.

For the next half of the semester I plan to do the following.

1.     Go to all of my classes

2.     Get all my work done

3.     Ask questions when I am unsure

4.     Keep doing what I am doing, it is clearly working

5.     Lastly, have fun and hangout with friends J

Even though midterm time is  stressful  I feel that if you do what you need to do during the semester then when it comes time for the test you are all prepared. Lastly, the professors are here to help you so make sure you take advantage of that.  

CITY BUS

Coming from a small town where everyone knows everyone you feel safe all of the time. In New Haven that is completely different. I feel that you have to always look over your shoulder and know what is going on around you at all times. At orientation they told us that when you live in New Haven no matter how confortable you feel here never let your guard down.

What I did that was out of my comfort zone was take the city bus with my friends. This was the first time that I have ever been on a public transportation bus. I have to say that I was pretty scared because people were looking at us because we defiantly looked like we did not belong there. Also, the grocery store that we needed to go to was not in the best area in town and the people there really scared me. I feel that it defiantly made a difference going during rush hour because there are a lot more people on the bus at this time.

I would have to say that I would not like to take the city bus again. My friends and I were so uncomfortable going to the store on the bus when it was time to go back to our dorm we called one of our friends to come and get us. When I told my parents they were so surprised that I would do something like that because I always hate to be out of my comfort zone. I guess it was good that I experienced it with my friends because if I was alone I think I would be more scared.
