The Semester is Over

My first semester as a college student is coming to an end and it went by so fast. I feel that I did very well do to the fact that I had a smooth transition into college life and great professors.
This semester I have learned a lot about myself as a person. I have always thought schooling is important and that you should take your education seriously because this is your future you are dealing with. In college I have noticed that I don’t wait last minute to do thing because in college you have a lot of things to do everyday and if you wait last minute you are going to stress yourself out. By doing assignments early I am not stressed and if something comes up last minute I normally can squeeze it in my day.
I had only one challenge this semester, which is a good thing. The problem that I had was with my Anthropology class. My teacher was very unclear of what she assigned to us and when I left class everyday I was always confused. I solved this by going to her office hours and trying to better understand what she was talking about. This kind of helped me but not really. Then I finally went to the head of the department and he talked to her and now so it explaining things better. It is very important in college that you self advocate for yourself because if you don’t then you will not succeed.
A lot of good things have happened to me this semester academically. First, at midterm time I had all A’s, which made me very happy because I work very hard. If you mange your time carefully it will pay off in your grade. Also, my professors were very helpful especially my English teacher because every time I had a question on my papers I would email her and she would get back to me within the hour.  I have already made connections with professors in many departments especially education, which is my major. I feel that is never to early to talk to department head because it is important you have all of the classes completed because you want to get into your program. Lastly, I have made many great friends here, which makes your college experience that much better.
Even though there are a lot of things going on in college it is very important that you have good time management. I feel that I have always been good at managing my time. What I do to help me get all my work done is write everything on a post it and have it on my desk in order of priority when it is done I threw it in the trash. And may I add that feels good. This semester I made sure that I did equal quality of work for all my classes. Sometimes I would send more time on anthropology because it was harder to understand but other than that all my classes got equal attention. The result of doing my work this way was that I had high averages in the class and had a full understanding of the course material. I plan throughout my college career to do my work this way because it has been very affective for me.
The goals that I set for myself at the beginning of the semester where met which makes me very happy. I plan to do the same thing that I was doing this semester but I will have to up it up a lot because this semester was kind of easy for me. Next semester I feel that my classes are going to be more challenging but there is nothing wrong with that. I am going to have to make sure that if I need help I talk to my professor and mange my time affectively and I will have another successful semester.

Math Department at SCSU Last Campus Safari

Just last week I picked my second major since education requires you to have another major. I decided to pick Math because it comes easy to me and I enjoy doing it. The math department is located on the main floor in Englaman and the head of the department is Doctor Bennett. She is very nice and helpful. She helped me arrange my schedule because I have to take up to Math 498 so there is a lot of class to take. The secretary is very helpful because I have dropped things off for Dr. Bennett and I get a personal phone call from her when they are done. She is great!!! If you like Math and have it, as you’re major or minor don’t be afraid of going to their office because they would be happy to help you.

Learning Community

I feel that at every school all freshmen should have a learning community there first semester. At SCSU there program is very helpful and also you have an all around smoother transition into the college workload and social life aspect.
With having a learning community you build a bond with the students in your class and you will do better in your class work because there is always 25 other people doing the same work. Also, in the classroom you have no problem talking about anything because you know the people well enough because they are in two classes with you.
There are a lot of things that I am going to miss about this class. To start off with everyday coming in and seeing what Professor Hawkins is going to say or do next is always interesting. And after ANT coming the INQ to talk about it and laugh at it. Lastly, I am going to miss the people in the class because all of us have gotten along great and we have a fun time as a class while we learn. It was a great semester and I hope next semester is the same!!!

Life After College

After college will be about in five to six years for me. Since I plan to get my masters in special education that will take me one to two extra years. After I am done with my schooling I would like to teacher first grade in Rocky Hill or Cromwell. Also, by this time a plan to have my own house and be married with two kids. Before I have children though I would like to travel and see the world. Also, I would like to maybe go to a under developed school in a different country and work with the children for a year. I feel that this will help me better understand different parts of the worlds education system and it can add a new dimension to how I teach. And sometime during my first ten years as a teacher I would like to go back to school to get my degree to become a principle of super intendant. I feel that this will be a great opportunity for me because I will have been in the classroom for about 10-15 years and have a good understand of that part of the education field and now I can maybe be in control of how a whole school runs. Lastly, I don’t think I will be living in Conn. After college. I plan to move to North Carolina of South Carolina because I love the weather there and I feel that Conn. is a boring state. If I move then I will have to find a house and a school district to teach in but I still have time to think about that. Life is always changing but it is good to have some type of plan.

The Other Wes Moore

On November 15,2011 at 7:30 the Author Wes Moore came to Southern to talk about the book The Other Wes Moore. What he talked about was his life story and how he went about writing the book.
Here are some of the interesting points that he made.
1)    he said that the title of the book was not his idea he wanted it to be Baltimore Sons
2)    He still talks to Wes and has a good relationship with him still after the book
3)    Lastly, he talked about peoples family life and how that can make a big different in the way a person behaves but it is not the only factor because both of their parents loved them and one turned out better than the other in the end.
